Rediscovering Your True Christ-Centered Identity

Headshot of Barbie Morgan Sheffield and her article From Identity Crisis to Confidence
I wonder if sometimes, as Christians, we have an ‘Identity Crisis’ and lose sight of who we are in Christ.

Have you ever found yourself wondering who you really are inside? I bet we’ve all heard it said that someone is having a ‘Mid-Life Crisis.’  And if you’re really honest with yourself, have you laid in bed at night thinking things like: “Who am I,  How did I get here?” or “I thought there was supposed to be more to being a Christian than this.”

I know I have. I remember once sitting in my Pastor’s office saying those exact words. I think we’ve all been there at one time or another. I wonder if sometimes, as Christians, we have an ‘Identity Crisis’ and lose sight of who we are in Christ.

If you’ve found yourself in a place where you’re just not quite sure who you are anymore, it is my hope, indeed my prayer, that you find great comfort and reassurance as you read, remember, and re-embrace these truths from God’s word about who you are. You can be that girl who daily, and yes, sometimes even in adversity and regardless of your past, is confidently believing and walking in her TRUE CHRIST-CENTERED IDENTITY!

I believe God gave me these verses to share with you as a reminder of His transforming power in the lives of His children. Knowing who you are in Christ is the foundation of being a Christian.

Never forget that God defines who we are, not the world. You are His beloved daughter, and He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. The One who knew YOU before He laid the foundation of the universe. He’s madly in love with you. After all, if He has favorites, you’re it!

  • She was already known by God before He laid the foundation of the world. (Ephesians 1:4)

  • She’s already loved by Him with an everlasting love, and He’s already drawn her to Himself. (Jeremiah 31:3)

  • She’s already more than a conqueror through Him who loves her. (Romans 8:37)

  • She’s already saved by grace and not her own works. (Ephesians 2:8)

  • She’s already never alone because Jesus will never leave her or forsake her and will never relax His grip on her. (Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5) She already knows God is for her. (Romans 8:31)

  • She’s already complete in Christ and she no longer has to compete or strive for His or anyone’s love because she’s already loved by the Creator of the universe who loves her madly and sings over her with rejoicing. (Hebrews 13:20-21 Zephaniah 3:17)

  • She’s already been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer she who lives but Christ who lives in her. (Galatians 2:20)

  • She’s already been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:18-19)

  • She’s already gone from wounded and afraid to one who seeks His face in the midst of the storm. (Psalm 147:3)

  • She’s already broken down every wall that has held her captive through Christ who strengthens her. (Philippians 4:13)
