What exactly is it that sets us apart from the rest of the world?
Placing our trust in Jesus grants us forgiveness of our sins and eternal life with Him. But there’s so much more for us right here, before we get to heaven! Those of us who believe in Jesus Christ have been gifted the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit within us is what sets us apart.
The power of God Himself lives within us! We have access to the Holy Spirit living with us and in us every day, but few of us know Him or understand what He’s capable of in our lives. Let’s do a little Bible study to look more closely at the Holy Spirit and His characteristics at work within us. I use the ESV translation.
In Revelation 1:4, John wrote of the “seven spirits who are before His throne”. He was speaking of the Holy Spirit and His seven attributes.
What does the number seven (7) signify in the Bible?
Read Isaiah 11:2. What are the seven attributes of the Holy Spirit?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Let’s break it all down.
The Spirit of the LORD
This isn’t any spirit, this is God’s Spirit Himself, the Spirit of YHWH through whom all things are possible. He is the One who makes all things new, who is powerful and tender all at once.
Read Isaiah 61:1-3. Considering that the Spirit of the LORD lives within you, which of these actions can you engage in during your current season?
The Spirit of Wisdom
God’s wisdom bypasses any earthly wisdom because He can see far beyond what we can. 1 Corinthians 1:30 tells us that Jesus “became to us wisdom from God”. Christ is the source of our wisdom.
Read 1 Corinthians 2:7-13 - Why is it important to have spiritual wisdom over the wisdom of the world?
The Spirit of Understanding
In Hebrew, the word ‘Understanding’ is associated with a sharp sense of smell. Being able to “sniff out” a situation and understand it for what it is. Understanding also speaks to compassion, truly a beautiful quality of our God.
Read Hebrews 4:15. Why is it important to have a God who understands us?
The Spirit of Counsel
Wisdom and understanding make the Holy Spirit the perfect Counselor. If you feel overwhelmed, conflicted, anxious, stressed, and struggling to fight the good fight, ask yourself, “Have you prayed about it?”
Read Psalm 73:2-3 and Psalm 73:23-24. What are your thoughts on the mental shift of the psalmist (Asaph) from the beginning of the Psalm to the end? (Feel free to read the whole Psalm for greater context.)
The Spirit of Might
Nothing in your life is mightier than the Holy Spirit – no challenge, no hardship, no obstacle, no fight. The devil himself cannot match the power of the Holy Spirit.
Read Zechariah 4:6. What is your understanding of God’s statement to Zerubbabel?
The Spirit of Knowledge
Without the Holy Spirit, it’s impossible to have the knowledge of truth that we need. The Holy Spirit uses the Bible to teach us about everything – God, ourselves, and life. When we read the Bible, gaining knowledge, insight, understanding, and wisdom from the Holy Spirit, His power and presence are magnified in us.
Read Proverbs 18:15. How does seeking knowledge throughout your life help you fight the good fight?
The Spirit of the Fear of the LORD
Fear of the LORD in this context means reverence, deep respect for God. This means that we should also have deep respect for the Holy Spirit dwelling inside us.
Read Proverbs 1:7. Why is fear of the LORD important to gain knowledge?
What would change in your life if you had a constant awareness of and reverence for the Holy Spirit inside you?
Galatians 5:22-23 tells us of the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These fruits are the evidence of the Holy Spirit at work within us. The attributes of the Holy Spirit lead to the fruit of the Spirit. It’s cause and effect. When we yield to the Holy Spirit within us, seek His counsel, rest in His might, pursue wisdom, knowledge, and understanding with Him, our lives will bear the kind of fruit that truly sets us apart.
