“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”  –Deuteronomy 31:8

There are seasons in life when we wonder if God still sees us. We pray, we wait, we hope, and sometimes we question whether the promises He placed in our hearts will ever come to pass.

Yet when I look back over my own life, I don’t see a God who was absent in the waiting. I see a faithful Father who was present in every step, gently leading me from promise to promise. Long before I understood His plans, He had already gone before me, preparing a path that only He could see.

David understood this kind of faith when he wrote, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me” (Psalm 23:4). The promise in that verse was never the absence of the valleys. The promise was the presence of God. David knew that the Shepherd never abandoned His sheep, even in the darkest places. Looking back, I realize that has been true of my life as well. There were seasons that felt uncertain, painful, and lonely.

At times I wondered if I had lost my way. Yet the Father never lost sight of me. He kept me under the shadow of His wings even when I couldn’t see where He was leading me. His protection wasn’t always the absence of pain; sometimes His protection was simply His presence in the middle of it.

One of the greatest gifts the Father gave me during those wilderness seasons was not a change in my circumstances but a restoration of my identity. The valley became the place where He gently replaced questions of worth with the truth of belonging. Healing began when I understood that my identity was never found in my successes, my failures, or even in the wounds I carried. My identity was found in Whose I was. I belonged to my Heavenly Father, the Promise Keeper who had never taken His hand off my life.

When I think about my story, I don’t begin with the difficult chapters. I remember a little girl who loved to dance, sing, laugh, and run. I remember grandparents who welcomed me with open arms, family road trips filled with laughter, cousins who became lifelong friends, and simple moments that reflected God’s goodness before I even recognized His hand. Those memories remind me that His faithfulness was woven into my story long before I understood His voice.

As I grew older, I searched for significance in places that could never satisfy. Like many women, I looked for my identity in others' approval, believing that acceptance could fill places only God was meant to occupy. I made mistakes and experienced brokenness, yet the Lord never stopped pursuing me. His grace was always greater than my failures, and His love remained constant even when I wandered. Looking back now, I can honestly say that nothing in my story has been wasted, because every season has revealed another part of His character.

The Lord has always spoken most clearly in quiet places. As I learned to be still before Him, I discovered that His voice often comes as a gentle whisper rather than a loud announcement. Years ago, while spending time in His presence, He showed me a vision that seemed impossible at the time: When I would be thirty-two years old, I would have a son. I didn’t know how that promise would unfold, nor did I know when it would come to pass. I simply carried it with open hands, trusting that the One who spoke it would also fulfill it.

This past February, I held my son in my arms and realized I was no longer carrying the promise; I was living in its fulfillment. At that moment, I wasn’t celebrating my faithfulness. I was overwhelmed by His. The vision had always been His. The promise had always been His. The timing had always been His. He had simply invited me to trust Him along the journey.

That experience reminded me of something the Lord has been teaching me for years: He plants before He produces. He refines before He reveals. He develops our character before He delivers the promise because He loves us too much to give us the gift without preparing our hearts to carry it well. The fire was not punishment; it was preparation. The waiting was not wasted; it was where my roots grew deep enough to sustain the life He was calling me into.

Through every season, I found myself returning to the same place—to prayer, worship, and surrender. Prayer kept my heart attentive to the Father’s voice. Worship lifted my eyes above what I could see and reminded me of who He is. Surrender released my need to control the outcome and allowed me to rest in His perfect timing. Somewhere along that journey, I realized that I wasn’t simply waiting for a promise. I was walking with the Promise Keeper Himself.

Today, redemption is no longer just something I talk about; it is the life I have the privilege of living. The Lord has restored what I thought was lost, healed places I believed would always remain broken, and entrusted me with opportunities to encourage young women, love my family from a place of wholeness, and testify to His goodness. None of it is because I have done everything right. It is because God has remained faithful through it all. He has been my Rock in every season, and every chapter of my story has become another opportunity to bring Him glory.

If there is one thing I hope every woman reading this carries with her, it is this: Perhaps the promise you are waiting for is not as far away as it feels. The Father still speaks. He still whispers hope in quiet places. He still reveals His plans to those who seek Him. Be still long enough to hear His voice. Open His Word. Pray. Worship. Surrender. The Promise Keeper is not waiting for you on the other side of your valley; He is walking beside you through it.

The wilderness was never meant to be your home. It is only a season. One day, every earthly promise will fade in comparison to the greatest promise we have in Christ: to dwell forever in the presence of our Heavenly Father. Until that day, we can continue walking in confidence, knowing that the God who goes before us is the same God who walks beside us. He has been faithful from the beginning; He is faithful today, and He will remain faithful for all eternity.

The wilderness was only temporary.  The promise is eternity.

My name is Brittni Northup, and I am a wife, mother, and floral designer. I am currently in my third year of Bible College at XploreNations. I live in a place where the weather can change unpredictably, and it’s in those unexpected moments that I’ve learned to appreciate the small things in life. To me, it is the little things that build the foundation for the bigger picture. Even the smallest hands in this world have a profound impact. I am here to help nurture and build up the next generation, to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, and to offer a smile or a hug in someone’s moment of doubt. I am grateful for the many fields of work I have been blessed to experience.
