Sobriety and Breaking FREE

Updated: May 15

My name is Chrystal Potter, and I am a Christian sobriety and life coach, founder of Anchor and Elevate: Transformational Life Coaching. My calling was born through years of wrestling with binge drinking, emotional pain, and ultimately, breakthrough in Christ.

For a long time, I didn’t think I had a “real” problem. I wasn’t drinking every day—and that actually kept me stuck longer. I told myself I was fine because I could go days without it. But most weekends, I drank heavily. One drink was never enough. I couldn’t understand how people could casually drink and call it fun. For me, drinking was an escape—something that helped me cope, feel in control, and silence what I didn’t want to feel. But deep down, I knew it was quietly controlling me.

The consequences showed up in hangxiety, shame, and a constant feeling that I wasn’t living up to who God created me to be. I looked fine on the outside, but inside I felt stuck in a cycle I couldn’t break.

That cycle intensified when I entered a toxic relationship that lasted over a decade. My drinking escalated. I couldn’t see it then, but I was using alcohol to numb the pain, confusion, and dysfunction. It clouded my identity, affected my choices, and kept me disconnected from God’s purpose for my life.

I always believed in God, but I didn’t have a personal relationship with Him. I knew of Him, but I didn’t know Him. That began to change when everything else started falling apart. The drinking wasn’t working anymore. The relationship was draining me. I was exhausted, spiritually empty, and longing for more.

It wasn’t one big moment, but a series of quiet convictions and nudges from the Holy Spirit that began to shift my heart. God started making me uncomfortable in situations I used to crave. He gently but firmly convicted me. He gave me the strength to walk away from alcohol and that toxic relationship. And He began rebuilding my life—anchored in His truth, elevated by His grace.

Sobriety for me isn’t just about alcohol—it’s about being of sober mind. Present, clear, and aligned with God's will. It’s about releasing the things that numbed me so I could fully feel, heal, and follow Christ. My story isn’t perfect, but it is redeemed.

Now, I help Christian women break free from binge drinking and destructive patterns that are holding them back. If you’re caught in a cycle—especially one the world says isn’t “bad enough”—know this: there is hope. There is freedom. Jesus met me right in the mess, and He will meet you, too.

When God steps in, nothing stays the same.
